On prominent display in the paddock at Marina Bay was a bronze bust of the late great Professor Sid Watkins along with a book of condolences. The only thing that was missing from the display was Sid’s battered and crumpled FIA hat which he kept solely to wind Bernie Ecclestone up. If there was one person in the pitlane who wouldn’t take orders from Bernie it was Sid and such is Bernie’s attention to detail - he likes all the motorhomes lined up with millimetre precision - that the hat would have been an irritant. Sid had a newer, smarter version of the cap but wouldn’t wear it. Bernie got the final say by commissioning the bust without the hat, but Sid would know doubt have appreciated the gesture.
